There is no universal van-finance deposit. The right amount depends on the lender, vehicle, applicant, desired monthly payment and how much working cash the business needs to retain.

Use a deposit to improve the proposal and lower borrowing, but do not empty the business account simply to chase the smallest monthly figure. Ask Damian for the van’s full purchase price and compare sensible HP illustrations at more than one deposit level (business users only).
What matters most
A bigger deposit normally means less borrowing and lower monthly repayments.
Zero-deposit finance may exist for suitable applicants, but it is not guaranteed or automatically cheaper overall.
Positive part-exchange equity can often contribute towards the deposit.
Compare total amount repayable as well as the monthly payment.
Choose the deposit around the business
Start with the maximum monthly payment the business can afford in an ordinary or quiet month. Then protect enough cash for VAT where applicable, insurance, sign-writing, racking, fuel, wages and unexpected repairs elsewhere in the business. The mathematically largest deposit is not always the commercially safest one.
Ask for illustrations using the same van, term and APR so the deposit is the only changing input. This shows clearly how much monthly payment and total interest each extra pound of deposit actually saves.
Can I get a van with no deposit?
Potentially, subject to lender criteria and status. Funding the entire eligible amount leaves the lender carrying more exposure and the customer borrowing more, so approval and monthly cost can differ from a deposit-backed proposal. Registration fees, road tax, VAT or options may also be treated separately.
A no-deposit headline should never hide a balloon, final fee or longer term. Check every payment, the ownership conditions and what happens if you settle early. On HP, ownership normally transfers only after the agreement’s required payments and purchase conditions are completed.
Cash deposit or part exchange
A paid-off van can be valued and its equity used towards the next purchase. If finance remains, obtain an up-to-date settlement figure and compare it with the valuation. Only the equity after settlement is available; a shortfall must be dealt with transparently.
Damian can price the new van for purchase and discuss the part exchange. Isaac can consider specialist funding when the deposit or credit profile makes the proposal less straightforward (business users only). Finance remains subject to status, checks and terms.

Part exchange with finance outstanding
Work out equity before relying on it as a deposit.
It is a useful illustration, not a rule. A lender may accept less, ask for more or structure eligible costs differently. Obtain a quotation for the actual applicant and van.
Does a larger deposit improve acceptance?
It can reduce the amount financed and strengthen some proposals, but it does not override affordability, credit or lender policy. Never assume a deposit guarantees approval.
Can the VAT be part of my deposit?
VAT treatment varies by product and lender. Some transactions require VAT upfront. The separate NewVan guide explains the issue, but confirm the written quotation with your accountant and finance provider.
Can I use my old van as the whole deposit?
Yes if its available equity is sufficient and the parties accept the valuation. If outstanding finance exceeds the value, there is negative equity rather than a deposit.
