Can I part exchange a van with outstanding finance?
A van with outstanding finance can often be part exchanged, but it cannot simply be treated as debt-free property. The current lender’s settlement figure must be checked against the van’s actual value.

Get a dated settlement letter first, then a realistic valuation. If the van is worth more than the settlement, the difference can support the next purchase. If it is worth less, pause and understand the shortfall before ordering another van or extending the debt.
What matters most
Ask the current lender for a formal settlement figure with an expiry date.
Positive equity is valuation minus settlement; negative equity is the opposite.
Do not sell a financed van privately without the lender’s permission and settlement process.
Keep written confirmation showing the old agreement has been cleared.
The three figures that matter
Write down the settlement amount, the part-exchange valuation and the complete price of the replacement van. A monthly-payment comparison alone can conceal negative equity, a longer term or a different deposit.
Settlement figures expire because interest and payments change the balance. A valuation can also move with mileage, condition and the market, so use figures that remain valid on the expected handover date.
What happens to positive or negative equity
Positive equity can usually be credited towards the replacement. Negative equity means the existing debt is greater than the van’s value. Paying that shortfall separately is the clearest route. If a lender allows it to be included in a new agreement, the extra borrowing, interest and loan-to-value must be made explicit.
Changing early is not always wrong: an unreliable or unsuitable van can cost the business money. But keeping a sound van for longer may allow equity to recover and is one reason ownership-focused finance can work well for commercial vehicles.
A safe handover
Confirm who will pay the existing lender, when payment will be made and what evidence you will receive. Remove business data and branding only at the agreed time, retain condition and mileage records, and tell the insurer when responsibility changes.

Can I part exchange a van with outstanding finance FAQs
Can I sell a van before the HP ends?
The finance provider normally has an interest in an HP vehicle until the agreement is completed. Contact it first and follow its settlement process; do not assume you can transfer clear title yourself.
What if my van is worth less than the settlement?
That is negative equity. Ask for the exact shortfall and compare paying it now, delaying the change or—only if available and affordable—financing it transparently within a new proposal.
Can part-exchange equity cover my next deposit?
Usually it can contribute once the old finance has been settled. The available amount is the accepted valuation minus the valid settlement figure and any agreed costs.
Will settling early damage my credit record?
Using an agreement’s proper settlement process is not the same as missing payments. Ask the lender how it will record the closure and keep confirmation that the balance is cleared.
