What van do I need to tow a trailer?

A headline towing figure is not permission to attach any trailer. The exact van, trailer, load, gross train weight, tow-bar approval, driving licence and commercial-use rules must all line up.

THE SHORT ANSWER

NewVan.co verdict

Choose the trailer and its realistic loaded weight first, then buy a van derivative approved to tow it with a useful safety and payload margin. Larger rear-wheel-drive vans can suit heavy work, while a medium van may be the better everyday tool for lighter trailers. Purchase or HP gives you long-term control of the tow-bar, wiring, sign-writing and fit-out, subject to lender and insurer approval while finance is active.

What matters most

  • Use the exact derivative's braked towing limit—not a range-wide maximum.
  • Gross train weight limits the loaded van and loaded trailer together.
  • Maximum payload and maximum trailer weight may not be usable simultaneously.
  • Check licence entitlement, insurance, tachograph and operator rules for the actual work.

Write down the real towing job

Record the trailer's plated maximum authorised mass and estimate its heaviest genuine working load: mini digger, mower, plant, materials or equipment. State how often you tow, the terrain, motorway use and what must remain inside the van at the same time.

A van that can tow the trailer only when almost empty may be useless for the business. Compare towing capacity, gross vehicle weight, gross train weight and axle limits together, then allow for passengers, tools, racking and tow-bar weight.

Braked capacity is only one limit

The manufacturer's braked trailer figure assumes a compliant trailer with working brakes. GOV.UK says a trailer over 750kg when loaded must have a working brake system. The VIN plate and handbook provide essential limits; if a train weight is not listed, do not assume the vehicle can tow.

Nose weight, trailer stability, tyre ratings, coupling, breakaway cable, mirrors and load distribution also matter. Ask the supplying dealer to confirm the selected van's factory towing approval and any required pack in writing.

Match the van to daily life

A large van may provide the strongest towing options but costs space, fuel and manoeuvrability every day. If the trailer is modest and occasional, a correctly specified medium van can be easier to own. Electric vans can tow in some derivatives, though trailer use may materially reduce practical range.

Give Damian the trailer plate details, intended load, van payload and routes. He can then compare current purchase options without pretending every engine, wheelbase or drive layout shares the same rating.

What van do I need to tow a trailer FAQs

Which vans can tow 3,500kg?

Some large-van derivatives may be rated to tow 3,500kg braked, but not every engine, drive layout or body. Confirm the exact current specification, VIN plate and gross train weight before purchase.

Can I tow at the same time as carrying maximum payload?

Not automatically. Gross train weight, axle limits and the manufacturer's conditions can reduce how much can be carried when towing near the maximum.

Can an electric van tow a trailer?

Some can, but approved capacity varies widely and towing can reduce range. Check the exact derivative, charging plan and combined working weight.

Do I need a special licence to tow with a van?

It depends on the categories shown on your licence and the vehicle and trailer weights. Check your DVLA record and current GOV.UK rules rather than relying on the van salesperson.
