New Ford Transit City: who is the electric urban van for?

Ford has added the all-electric Transit City to its UK commercial-vehicle range. Its compact footprint, three body styles and city-focused range make it one to examine for local delivery and urban service work.

THE SHORT VERSION

What you need to know

  • Ford states a driving range of up to 158 miles, depending on version and use.
  • The L1H1 panel van offers up to 6.4m³ of cargo volume and a stated payload of up to 1,085kg.
  • The L2H2 panel van increases cargo volume to 8.5m³ and stated payload to 1,275kg.
  • A chassis-cab version is also listed with a stated payload of up to 1,600kg.

What is the Ford Transit City?

Transit City is a new all-electric Ford work van aimed primarily at urban deliveries and predictable local routes. Ford lists L1H1 and L2H2 panel vans plus a chassis cab, so the name covers more than one size and payload rather than a single fixed specification.

Its 56kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery and 110kW motor are designed around city work. Ford quotes a maximum driving range of 158 miles and a 10-to-80% rapid-charge time of 33 minutes, but real range and charging time will vary with payload, temperature, driving style and charger performance.

Which businesses should put it on the shortlist?

The strongest case is for businesses whose vans return to a depot or home base, cover repeatable daily mileage and spend much of the day in towns or cities. Parcel delivery, facilities maintenance, food distribution and local trade work are obvious examples—provided the chosen body style carries the real load safely.

A buyer covering unpredictable long-distance work, towing regularly or relying on public charging should check the route and charging plan carefully before committing. The headline range is not a promise that every fully laden van will travel 158 miles in all conditions.

Why buying may make sense

Buying outright or using Hire Purchase can suit an operator who plans to sign-write, rack out or convert the van and keep it after the finance ends. There is no contract mileage allowance or lease hand-back inspection, and the business may retain a saleable asset. Suitability, whole-life cost and likely resale demand should still be checked rather than assuming electric is automatically cheaper.

National Autos is not advertising Ford's own finance promotion. Damian can instead help check the specification, availability and purchase price of a Transit City or compare it with another van that better suits the work.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?

Your questions answered

Is Transit City smaller than a full-size Transit?

Yes. Ford positions it as an urban working van. Compare the exact load length, door openings, volume and payload with your present van before deciding.

Can it carry more than one tonne?

Ford quotes more than one tonne for each listed body style, but the precise payload depends on version, equipment and conversion. Use the plated figure for the actual vehicle.

Is 158 miles enough for a working van?

It can be enough for predictable local routes with reliable overnight charging. It may be restrictive for variable long-distance work, especially in winter or with heavy loads.

Can I buy one rather than lease it?

Yes. NewVan.co and National Autos focus on helping customers source vans for purchase. Buying or HP may suit businesses that want ownership, modification freedom and no contract mileage limit.

Can Damian compare it with another electric van?

Yes. Send Damian your daily mileage, payload, charging access and preferred body size so he can compare likely candidates and search available stock.
