A price shown '+ VAT' is not automatically your net cost. Whether VAT can be reclaimed depends on registration, the vehicle, business purpose, evidence and the VAT scheme you use.

NewVan.co verdict
A VAT-registered business can generally recover VAT on a van or other commercial vehicle supplied to it and used for its business, subject to the normal rules. Private use, vehicle classification, the invoice and schemes such as Flat Rate can change the answer. Confirm your own treatment with an accountant before ordering.
What matters most
You normally need to be VAT registered and hold a valid VAT invoice.
The van must be supplied to the registered business and used for business purposes.
Private use and special VAT schemes can affect recovery or create further VAT treatment.
A car-derived van or combi may need a classification check rather than an assumption from appearance.
Start with the registered business
HMRC's commercial-vehicle guidance says VAT on a lorry, van or other commercial vehicle can be recovered when it is supplied to a registered person and used for the purpose of their business. The purchase paperwork therefore matters as much as the badge on the bonnet.
Keep the VAT invoice and evidence of business use. If the buyer, finance structure or invoice name is unclear, resolve it before the van is ordered rather than trying to repair the paper trail later.
Private use and unusual vehicle types
HMRC says incidental private use of most commercial vehicles is generally viewed as de minimis in its input-tax manual, but substantial or charged private use can change the treatment. Do not extend a general rule to your facts without advice.
Double-cab, combi and car-derived vehicles can be more complicated. HMRC publishes classification material for some car-derived vans and combi vans; check the exact model and use.
Do not spend the VAT refund twice
Even where VAT is recoverable, the timing of payment and recovery matters to cash flow. Some HP structures require a VAT-sized initial payment; the reclaim arrives through the VAT return, not instantly at the dealership.
Ask Damian for the VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive figures, then ask your accountant how and when recovery would work for your registration and scheme.

Small-van reviews
Compare commercial vans before checking the exact tax treatment.
Can a non-VAT-registered business reclaim van VAT?
Generally it cannot reclaim VAT through a normal VAT return. Treat the VAT-inclusive amount as the cost unless a qualified adviser confirms another applicable route.
Can I reclaim VAT if I use the van privately?
It depends on the extent and nature of private use and your wider VAT position. HMRC has specific rules, so obtain advice for regular private availability or use.
Does the Flat Rate Scheme change the answer?
It can. HMRC says Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on purchases except for certain capital assets over £2,000, subject to the scheme rules.
Is every pickup or crew van treated as a van?
No assumption is safe. Vehicle classification can differ by tax and VAT context and may depend on the exact construction. Check the precise model.
