How many miles is too many for a used van?

There is no universal mileage at which a van becomes a bad buy. A correctly serviced motorway van can be a better prospect than a lower-mileage vehicle that has spent its life overloaded, cold-started and neglected.

THE SHORT ANSWER

NewVan.co verdict

Treat mileage as one part of the evidence. Buy on condition, documented maintenance, MOT history, duty cycle and the cost of putting faults right. A high-mileage van needs a price that leaves a repair reserve; a low-mileage van still needs the same inspection.

What matters most

  • Verify the displayed mileage against MOT records, invoices and service entries.
  • Repeated short trips can be harder on a modern diesel emissions system than steady longer journeys.
  • Payload history, towing, idling and conversion weight can matter as much as distance.
  • Budget for tyres, brakes, servicing, timing-drive work and emissions-system maintenance due by age or mileage.

Why 100,000 miles is not an automatic cut-off

A commercial vehicle may cover substantial motorway mileage quickly while being serviced on time and driven warm for long periods. Another can reach a much lower figure through stop-start work, long idle periods and heavy urban loads. The odometer cannot describe that difference on its own.

The better question is whether the price, history and present condition make sense for the work you expect it to do. If downtime would stop your business, the cheapest high-mileage example may be false economy even when it drives well on a short test.

Build an evidence file before you buy

Use the free GOV.UK MOT-history service to compare mileage readings and read advisories over time. Ask for invoices rather than relying only on a stamped book, and check that the registration, VIN and dates match the van.

Confirm the manufacturer's age-and-mileage schedule for the exact engine and gearbox. Look for evidence of the correct oil specification, transmission servicing where required, brake-fluid changes and any timing-belt or chain work that is due. A verbal promise is not the same as a dated invoice.

Inspection and total-cost checks

Inspect from cold. Check warning lights illuminate and extinguish normally, listen for unusual noises, test every door and lock, examine the load floor and roof for distortion, and look underneath for damage or leaks. Uneven tyres, poor tracking, clutch slip, reluctant gear selection or dashboard warnings justify specialist investigation.

Price the first year, not just the windscreen figure. Include overdue maintenance, tyres, brakes, security, racking, insurance and the possibility of lost working days. An independent inspection is especially valuable where the van has high mileage, incomplete history or specialist equipment.

Questions people ask

How many miles is too many for a used van FAQs

Is 100,000 miles too much for a used van?

Not automatically. It can be acceptable with strong maintenance evidence, sound condition and a price that reflects future repairs. The same mileage is less attractive with gaps in history or signs of hard use.

Is age or mileage more important?

Both matter, alongside duty cycle and care. Age affects rubber, corrosion, fluids and time-based service items; mileage affects wear. Condition and evidence decide how those factors combine.

How can I check a van's mileage?

Compare the odometer with GOV.UK MOT history, service invoices and workshop records. Investigate unexplained reversals, long gaps or inconsistent annual use before paying a deposit.

Should I avoid an ex-fleet van?

No blanket rule works. Fleet use can mean disciplined maintenance but also intensive work and multiple drivers. Judge the individual vehicle and obtain its records.
