This is not a vote for old technology or new technology. It is a route-and-load calculation. Electric can be excellent when charging and mileage are predictable; diesel remains practical for long, variable or towing-heavy days.

NewVan.co verdict
Buy electric when home or depot charging, daily range and payload work with a comfortable margin. Buy diesel when mileage, charging access, load or towing makes electric operationally fragile. Either way, ownership can let you keep the van long enough to benefit from the decision.
What matters most
Use worst regular winter mileage, not an ideal brochure day.
Battery weight can change payload, so compare exact derivatives.
Government grant eligibility and amounts can change; check before ordering.
Include charger installation, electricity tariff, fuel and downtime in total cost.
When an electric van works well
Predictable local or regional routes and dependable overnight charging are the strongest case. An electric van can start each day charged, operate quietly and avoid tailpipe emissions during use.
The government's eligible-van list shows which models currently qualify for purchase support. The seller applies an eligible grant as a discount; buyers should not assume every electric van or order qualifies.
When diesel remains the practical choice
Long or irregular days, remote work, heavy towing and weak charging access can make diesel easier to operate. Refuelling is fast and the available used-support network is familiar.
Diesel use should still be assessed against clean-air routes, fuel costs and the length of ownership. A modern diesel used mainly for repeated short trips may also be a poor operational match.
Compare the exact purchase
Ask for battery capacity, official range, charging speed, cable and charger requirements, payload and warranty for the exact electric derivative. For diesel, confirm engine output, emissions standard, service schedule and AdBlue requirements.
Calculate total cost over realistic years and mileage. Damian can price both types for purchase; National Autos does not currently present leasing as its service.
They can be where charging electricity is well priced and routes suit the vehicle. Purchase price, charger cost, public charging, payload and downtime must also be included.
Do electric vans have less payload?
Some do because battery weight affects the calculation, but it varies by model and weight class. Check the exact derivative rather than applying a general rule.
Can I get a government grant on an electric van?
Some eligible zero-emission vans currently receive a discount through the seller. Eligibility and maximum support change, so check the live GOV.UK list before ordering.
Should I buy electric if I cannot charge at home or work?
Only if reliable public charging genuinely fits the route and working schedule. For many operators, dependable base charging is what makes electric practical.
